Download a Pinterest GIF (and why it's really a video)

You look for a GIF on Pinterest, you find it, and when you try to save it you end up with a video. That's not your mistake: what Pinterest displays as a "GIF" is almost never a .gif file. It's a short, looping MP4 with no sound. Here's why, what you actually download, and what to do if you genuinely need a GIF.

Why platforms stopped using real GIFs

The GIF format is nearly forty years old and enormously heavy: a five-second clip can weigh ten times more as a GIF than as a video. That's why Pinterest — like X, Reddit or Instagram — stores those animations as looping MP4s with no audio track, and merely presents them looking like GIFs. They look identical, weigh a fraction, and load instantly.

So what am I downloading?

An MP4. Paste the pin's link into PullVid and we hand it over as is: the same looping clip you were watching, as a video file. That's what's really behind it, and it's also what WhatsApp, Telegram and any editor accept. If the pin has no audio — and these don't — we won't offer you the MP3 option, because there'd be nothing to extract.

How to do it, step by step

1. Open the pin with the animation in Pinterest.
2. Copy its link: three dots → Share → Copy link. The short pin.it one works.
3. Paste it into PullVid and wait while it loads.
4. Download the MP4. That's the real file.

And if I really need a .gif?

Sometimes you do: for an old forum, a signature, or a site that only takes GIFs. In that case, download the MP4 first with the method above and convert it afterwards. Bear in mind the obvious: the resulting file will weigh considerably more and lose some colour fidelity, because GIF only supports 256 colours. That's not a quirk on our side, it's how the format works.

Silent pins aren't a fault

This is the most common confusion and deserves saying plainly: if you download a Pinterest animation and it makes no sound, nothing is broken. That clip never had audio.
