What's converting a GIF to MP4 good for?
Many social networks and messaging apps — X/Twitter, WhatsApp, Telegram — already convert the GIFs you upload into a compressed video internally, because a GIF weighs far more than the same animated content as a video. Converting it yourself before uploading gets you a lighter file, faster to send, with more control over the final result, instead of leaving it to the platform's automatic process.
How it works: from GIF frames to compressed video
We use ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, running in your browser tab: it breaks the GIF down into its frames and re-encodes them as H.264 video inside an MP4 container. By using real video compression instead of the GIF's limited color palette, the result takes up a fraction of the size while keeping the same animation.
Steps to convert your GIF to MP4

Why the MP4 weighs less (and still has no sound)
GIF is an old format built for simple graphics, not video: it stores each frame almost uncompressed and with a reduced color palette. MP4 with H.264, on the other hand, takes advantage of how similar consecutive frames are to compress far more efficiently. The result is the same animated content, visually equivalent, in a noticeably lighter file. Since the GIF never had audio, neither does the MP4.
Honest limits worth knowing
Since the process runs in your browser, the real limit is your device's memory and processing power, not an artificial cap of ours. Very long GIFs or ones with lots of frames can take a bit longer to process, especially on phones with limited RAM. This converter processes one file at a time, on a single thread.
