Discord lowered the limit, and that is why it fails now
If you feel you used to be able to upload videos and now you cannot, you are not imagining it: the free-account limit went from 25 MB to 10 MB in 2024. That is a substantial cut, and it explains why clips you had been sharing for years suddenly stopped fitting.

10 MB is for clips, not for long videos
It helps to have the scale clear before compressing: 10 MB is enough for about half a minute at good quality, or a couple of minutes at a more modest resolution. Beyond that the budget gets aggressive and the video starts breaking into blocks whenever the picture moves.
When the video is long, trimming almost always beats squeezing. If what you want to share is ten specific seconds of a match, sending just those ten seconds at good quality looks far better than the whole five minutes crushed into 10 MB — and it compresses faster too, since time follows duration.
Which format uploads best
The result is an MP4 with H.264 and AAC, which Discord plays inline in the chat without making anyone download the file. MKV and WebM upload fine, but they often appear as a plain attachment with no player, which rather defeats the point of sharing a clip.

10 MB per file on free accounts. It sat at 25 MB for years and was cut to 10 MB in 2024, which is why something that used to work started failing for a lot of people. Nitro Basic raises it to 50 MB and full Nitro to 500 MB.
What if I have Nitro?
Type your cap into the custom size field: 50 for Nitro Basic or 500 for Nitro. With that much headroom you will usually keep the original resolution, so the quality cost is minimal.
Why does my video look bad at 10 MB?
Because 10 MB does not stretch far: it is a cap meant for short clips. A 30-second video fits comfortably and stays at 720p; a five-minute one has to drop a lot of resolution. The table shows you the number before you start, and if it is not worth it you can always trim the video and send only the part that matters.
Can I upload it to a boosted server?
Server boosts raise the upload limit for every member (up to 50 MB at level 2 and 100 MB at level 3). If the server you are posting to is boosted, use that number in the custom field instead of the default 10 MB.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. It is compressed inside your browser with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly; the file never travels to our servers or anyone else's. It only leaves your machine when you upload it to Discord yourself.
