Conversion details
How do you convert a MOV to MP4?
Choose the MOV file you want to convert to MP4 (an iPhone-recorded video, for example).
Hit 'Convert'; since it's a remux (no re-encoding), the process is nearly instant.
Download the resulting MP4; it saves straight to your device.
If you have a video recorded with an iPhone camera or exported from QuickTime in MOV format and need to share it on an Android device, a website, or a program that doesn't handle it well, this converter turns it into MP4 without touching the video, right in your browser.
What's converting a MOV to MP4 good for?
MOV is the native format of the iPhone camera and of QuickTime on Mac. It looks perfect within Apple's own ecosystem, but outside of it compatibility narrows: some Android apps, older video editors and certain websites work better — or only — with MP4. Converting it widens where you can play and share it without changing the video's content.
How it works: instant remux, not re-encoding
We use ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly with direct stream copy ('-c copy'): the MOV's video and audio (usually H.264 or HEVC plus AAC, the same codecs MP4 supports) get repackaged inside an MP4 container without decompressing or recompressing anything. That's why the process is nearly instant, even with long 4K videos.
Steps to convert your MOV to MP4
- Choose the MOV file from your device ('Choose file' button).
- Hit 'Convert'. The first time, your browser downloads the conversion engine (a few MB); after that, it's faster.
- Wait a few seconds for the remux to finish.
- Download the resulting MP4 with the 'Download result' button.
What happens with Cinematic mode or ProRes videos
Videos shot in the iPhone camera's normal mode (H.264 or HEVC) convert without any issue. Those recorded in Cinematic mode or exported as ProRes (available on Pro models) use codecs the MP4 container doesn't support as-is, so the direct remux can fail in those cases; you'd need to re-encode the video with a desktop program instead, which does mean a small quality loss.
Honest limits worth knowing
Since the process runs in your browser, the real limit is your device's memory when loading the file, not an artificial cap of ours. Very long 4K videos (several GB) can take longer to load, especially on phones with limited RAM — try a computer if that happens. If the remux fails, it's almost always down to a non-standard codec (see above), not the file's size.
Other related conversions
If your video comes in another container, you can also convert a MKV to MP4 (same instant remux) or a WebM to MP4 (this one does require re-encoding). If all you want is the audio, try MP4 to MP3 once you have the file in MP4. If you don't have the video yet, use our YouTube video downloader.
Frequently asked questions about MOV → MP4
Why convert an iPhone MOV to MP4 if it already plays on the phone?
MOV looks perfect on Apple devices, but many Android apps, some editing programs and certain websites only accept MP4. Converting it widens compatibility without losing any quality.
Do I lose quality converting the MOV to MP4?
No. The conversion is a remux: we copy the video and audio as-is, with no re-encoding, so the result is identical in quality to the original MOV.
Does it work with videos shot in Cinematic mode or ProRes?
Videos recorded in Cinematic mode (with background blur) or in ProRes format on Pro iPhones use codecs that MP4 doesn't support without re-encoding, so the remux can fail in those specific cases. For videos shot with the camera in normal mode, the remux works fine.
Are the video's orientation metadata preserved?
Yes — since the video stream is copied as-is, the orientation (portrait or landscape) stays exactly as it was in the original file.
Is there a size limit for long MOV videos?
We don't set an artificial limit, but the process runs in your browser: very large files (several GB, typical of long 4K iPhone videos) can take longer to load, especially on phones with limited RAM. The remux itself stays fast.
I don't have the MOV file yet — can I download it here?
This converter works with a MOV file you already have saved, typically recorded with an iPhone camera. If instead you want to download a video from a social network, use our YouTube video downloader, which delivers directly in MP4.
