Lossless vs. lossy: what you gain and what you give up
Going from FLAC to MP3 is a one-way trade: you gain universal compatibility and a much lighter file, but you give up the guarantee that the audio is an exact copy of the master. At the high VBR setting we use, that trade-off is inaudible in practically every real-world case — regular headphones, car speakers, Bluetooth — though a sound engineer with reference-grade gear could, in theory, tell the difference. Honest limits worth knowing
Since the conversion happens in your browser, the real limit is your device's memory and processing power, not an artificial cap of ours. High-resolution FLAC files (24-bit/96 kHz) or very long full albums can take longer or use quite a bit of memory on phones with limited RAM. This converter processes one file at a time, on a single thread, so converting an entire discography goes better one file at a time from a computer.

Do I lose quality converting a lossless FLAC to MP3?
Technically, yes: FLAC is lossless (it keeps the audio bit-for-bit) while MP3 is lossy (it discards data to weigh less). At the high quality setting we use (VBR, ~190 kbps average), the difference is inaudible to most ears and gear, but it's no longer an exact copy of the master.
So why convert my FLAC library to MP3 at all?
Because plenty of phones with limited storage, cars, simple Bluetooth speakers and some streaming apps either don't play FLAC or handle it poorly, while MP3 works with absolutely everything. On top of that, MP3 weighs several times less, so many more songs fit in the same amount of space.
Should I delete the original FLAC after converting?
We don't recommend it. Keep the FLAC as your lossless master copy (on a drive or in the cloud) and use the MP3 as a practical copy for your phone or car. If you ever delete the MP3, you can always regenerate it from the FLAC — the other way around, you can't.
What quality is the MP3 I get?
We encode the audio with libmp3lame at a high variable bitrate, roughly 190 kbps on average. For most ears and most playback gear, it's indistinguishable from the original FLAC.
Is there a limit on the FLAC file's length or size?
