How it works: from video to animated frames
We use ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, running in your browser tab: it extracts the video's frames, generates a color palette optimized for GIF, and reassembles them into an animated file at ~10 fps and 480px wide. The whole process happens on your machine; the clip is never uploaded to any server.

Why the output is ~10 fps and 480px wide
A GIF at the resolution and frame rate of a normal video (24-60 fps, 1080p) would be absurdly heavy and nearly impossible to share. That's why the output is generated at ~10 fps and 480px wide: it still looks smooth enough for a reaction or a meme, but the resulting file is much more manageable to upload to a chat or a forum.
Honest limits worth knowing
Since the process runs in your browser, the real limit is your device's memory and processing power, not an artificial cap of ours. Remember: the converter doesn't trim, so a long video will take a while and produce a heavy GIF even at the reduced resolution we use — on phones with limited RAM this can even run out of memory. Always use short clips, a few seconds long.

Frequently asked questions about MP4 → GIF
Can I convert any MP4 video to GIF, even a long one?
Technically yes, but we don't recommend it: the converter processes the ENTIRE clip without trimming it, so a video several minutes long produces a huge, slow-loading GIF. It's built for clips a few seconds long; if your video is long, trim it first with another tool and upload only the part you want to animate.
Can I choose which part of the video becomes the GIF?
Not right now: the converter takes the file exactly as you upload it, start to finish. If you only want a few seconds out of a longer video, trim it first with a video editor and convert the already-trimmed clip here.
Why does the GIF weigh so much more than the original video?
The GIF format compresses much worse than video: each frame is stored almost uncompressed, with a limited color palette. That's why we cap the output at ~10 fps and 480px wide, a balance between file size and looking good; even so, a GIF will always be heavier than the same clip as a video.
Why doesn't the resulting GIF have sound?
Because the GIF format doesn't support audio at all, not ours or any other converter's: it's a limitation of the format itself, not something we decided.
