How to download videos to make a GIF

June 28, 20266 min read

To turn a moment from a video into a GIF or a meme you first need the clip saved on your device. With PullVid you download the video as MP4 and then convert it to a GIF with a separate tool. Important and honest: PullVid downloads the video; the GIF conversion is done with a GIF tool like Giphy or ezgif, not inside PullVid.

Why download a video to make a GIF?

A GIF is born from a short video fragment. To create one you need that clip as a file and to run it through a converter that extracts a few seconds and loops them. Downloading the video is therefore the first step to making a reaction GIF, a meme or a short animation that you then share in chats and on social media.

What should you download for a GIF?

A GIF only needs a few seconds, so a short MP4 clip is enough. You don't need 4K: a medium resolution keeps the file light, which is exactly what you want in a GIF. Download the full video and then trim the exact moment in the converter. If you're unsure about formats, check the guide on the best video formats and quality.

How to make a GIF from a video, step by step

  1. Copy the video link and paste it into PullVid.
  2. Download the video as MP4 (a medium resolution is enough for a GIF).
  3. Open a GIF tool like Giphy or ezgif (or the editor you prefer).
  4. Upload the downloaded MP4 and trim the seconds you want to convert.
  5. Export the result as a GIF and download it to share.

PullVid downloads the video; the GIF conversion is separate

To be clear: PullVid does not create GIFs. Its job is to download the video as MP4; the GIF conversion is done by a separate GIF tool (Giphy, ezgif, an editor). There is one useful exception: GIFs already posted on X/Twitter are actually served as MP4 video, so for that specific case you can download them directly. We explain it in downloading GIFs from Twitter/X.

Common problems when making a GIF

  • The GIF is too heavy: trim to a shorter clip and lower the resolution or the frames per second in the converter.
  • The GIF looks choppy: raise the frames per second, though that increases the size a bit; find the balance.
  • The colors look off: a GIF uses a limited palette; for something more faithful, consider keeping it as a short video.
  • I don't know where to trim: download the full video with PullVid and do the fine trimming inside the GIF converter.

Frequently asked questions

Does PullVid convert the video into a GIF?

No. PullVid downloads the video as MP4. The GIF conversion is done with a separate tool like Giphy or ezgif. PullVid is the step before that: it gives you the clip ready to convert.

What resolution should I download for a GIF?

A medium resolution is enough. A GIF lasts a few seconds and should be light, so you don't need 4K. Download as MP4 and trim the moment in the converter.

Can I download a GIF that's already on Twitter/X?

Yes. GIFs on X/Twitter are actually served as MP4 video, so they can be downloaded directly. We explain it in the guide on downloading GIFs from Twitter/X.

Why is my GIF so heavy?

Because it's long or has too much resolution or too many frames. Trim to a shorter clip and reduce the resolution or fps in the converter to make it lighter.
