What can be promised and what cannot

Plenty of sites offer to compress video "without losing quality". It is a comfortable promise and it is not true: reducing a video's weight means re-encoding it, and re-encoding means discarding information that does not come back. We would rather say so than have you find out by comparing.

What can be promised, and it is the part you actually care about, is that you will not notice. A video shot on a phone usually carries far more bitrate than an ordinary screen needs; trimming that excess leaves an image indistinguishable from the original in normal playback. That is the realistic goal.

Why some compressed videos look fine and others look blocky

The difference is almost never how much it was compressed, but how. The classic mistake of automatic tools is to hold the resolution high at all costs and push the bitrate down as far as needed. The result is a 1080p with so little data that the codec cannot describe motion: blocks, dirty edges and that murky look the moment the camera moves.

The alternative is to reduce the resolution once the data budget will not stretch. A well-fed 720p looks clean and sharp; a starved 1080p looks bad at any size. That is why the tool drops resolution rather than choking the image, and tells you exactly where it lands.

Three rules that help more than any setting

  • Always compress from the original. Every re-encode inherits the flaws of the last one; starting from an already-compressed copy multiplies the loss.
  • Trim before you squeeze. If only part of it matters, sending that part at good quality looks far better than the whole thing crushed — and it is faster.
  • Match the resolution to the destination. A video that will be watched on a phone gains nothing from being 4K: dropping to 1080p saves a great deal and does not show.

Can a video be compressed with NO quality loss at all?

Honestly: no. Compressing a video means re-encoding it, and that discards information irreversibly. Truly lossless compression exists, but it barely reduces the size and produces files almost no player opens, so it does not serve what you want. What is achievable is that the loss does not show — and that we can do.

So why does it show less here?

Because we do not crush the bitrate blindly. We work out which resolution and bitrate the size you asked for requires, and pick the combination that holds up best: while there is headroom the resolution is kept, and when there is not we drop the resolution instead of leaving a 1080p starved of data, which is precisely what produces those ugly blocks in motion.

Which option should I pick so it does not show?

The first one in the list. It is computed from your video's real bitrate to keep the original resolution, so the difference is practically invisible in normal playback. The ones below reduce more, and each states the resolution it drops to.

What if my video was already compressed?

Then there is little headroom, and it is worth knowing. A video downloaded from a social network has already been through heavy compression; compressing again stacks loss on loss. In those cases the first option will offer a modest reduction, because that is what can be removed without ruining it. That is information, not a fault.

Does compressing twice make it worse?

Yes. Each re-encode starts from the previous result rather than the original, so flaws are inherited and amplified. If you need to compress a video for several destinations, always start from the original file and not from an already-compressed copy.
