Download Instagram stories and photos

June 22, 20268 min read

Instagram has no native download button — not for stories, not for feed photos, not for carousels. If you want to save something, you need an external tool. This guide explains how to do it quickly, safely, and without installing anything, using PullVid Instagram.

Before we start, one important note: PullVid can only access content from public accounts. If an account is private, its content is not available to external tools. For Reels, which have their own workflow, we have a dedicated guide: download Reels. This article focuses on stories, feed photos, and carousels.

What can you download from Instagram (and what you cannot)

Instagram hosts different types of content, and not all of them are equally accessible from outside the platform. Here is the full map:

  • Stories: available if the account is public and the story has not expired yet (they last 24 hours).
  • Feed photos (individual posts): fully downloadable from public accounts.
  • Carousels (posts with multiple photos or videos): downloadable, though some tools only extract the first image; PullVid lets you select individual media items.
  • Reels: they work with PullVid, but have their own detailed guide: download Instagram Reels without an app.
  • IGTV and long videos: downloadable from public accounts.
  • Private accounts: not accessible. The platform does not expose content to external tools without authentication.
  • Close Friends stories: only visible to authorized followers; not downloadable.

The rule is clear: if you need to be logged in and following someone to view the content, no external tool can download it. Only publicly visible content is accessible.

Download Instagram stories

Instagram stories are ephemeral: they disappear after 24 hours and, unless the creator saves them to their Highlights, they are gone forever. If you want to keep a story before it expires, here are the steps with PullVid:

  1. Open the creator's profile on Instagram (must be a public account).
  2. Copy the link: in the mobile app, tap the three dots (⋯) on the story and select "Copy link". In the browser, copy the URL directly from the address bar.
  3. Paste into PullVid: go to PullVid Instagram and paste the link into the search field.
  4. Choose the format: select the quality and format you prefer (MP4 for video, JPG for image).
  5. Download: the file will be saved to your device's downloads folder.

Note about Highlights: stories saved as Highlights do not have the 24-hour limit. Their link stays active and you can download them exactly like any other story.

Download photos and carousels

Feed photos and carousels are Instagram's most stable content: they remain indefinitely as long as the creator does not delete them. Downloading them is equally simple:

  1. Open the post on Instagram that you want to save.
  2. Copy the link: tap the three dots (⋯) in the corner of the post and choose "Copy link". On PC, copy the URL from the address bar.
  3. Paste into PullVid and wait for the options to load.
  4. Select the media: in a carousel, you can see each photo or video in the album separately and choose which ones to download.
  5. Download at original quality.

Carousels can mix photos and short videos. PullVid treats each item as a separate file, so if the carousel has 5 photos and 2 videos, you will see 7 download options.

Download videos and Reels

Feed videos (distinct from Reels) work exactly like photos: copy the post link and paste it into PullVid. They download as MP4 files at the original video quality.

For Reels, the steps are identical, but they have their own characteristics (vertical format, variable speeds, independent audio). If you want a Reels-specific guide — including tips on quality and handling Reels with third-party audio — check the dedicated article: download Instagram Reels without an app.

From mobile vs from PC

PullVid works the same in both environments, but there are some practical differences to keep in mind:

  • Mobile (Android): Chrome downloads the file directly to the Downloads folder. To move it to your gallery, open your file manager (My Files on Samsung, Files on stock Android) and move it to the photos or videos folder.
  • Mobile (iPhone/iOS): Safari saves files to the built-in Files app. From there, press and hold the file and select "Save to Photos" to move it to your camera roll.
  • PC: the browser saves the file to your system's Downloads folder. On Windows you can access it from File Explorer; on Mac, from Finder.
  • Key difference on mobile: copying a story link in the Instagram app is often easier than in the mobile browser. Always use the app to copy and the browser to paste into PullVid.

Privacy: public content only and responsible use

Downloading Instagram content raises two dimensions worth separating clearly: the technical and the ethical.

Technically, PullVid can only access what Instagram exposes publicly. Any content behind a private account is inaccessible without user credentials. This is not an arbitrary limitation: it is the same barrier that protects your own private content.

Ethically, being able to download something does not mean you should do so in every context. Here are the guidelines we recommend:

  • Download for personal use: save a photo you admire, a tutorial you want to consult offline, a story before it disappears.
  • Do not redistribute without permission: reposting someone else's content on your social media or on another platform without crediting the source and without permission is bad practice, even if it is technically possible.
  • Respect copyright: Instagram photos and videos are protected by copyright from the moment they are created. Private personal use is acceptable; commercial use without a license is not.
  • Consider the impact: massively downloading and sharing a creator's content without linking to their original profile can harm them. If you like their work, support them by following or engaging with their posts.

Frequently asked questions

Can you download a story without the person knowing?

PullVid does not notify the creator when you download their story. Instagram also does not track downloads made through external tools. However, if you view a story from your own Instagram account, the creator can see that you viewed it, just as normal.

Can I download profile pictures?

Profile pictures from public accounts are visually accessible, but they are not available as downloadable items in PullVid, which focuses on stories, posts, and videos. For a profile picture, you can take a screenshot.

Does it work with private accounts?

No. PullVid only accesses publicly visible content. Private accounts require authentication to view any content, which is beyond the reach of external tools.

How do I download a full carousel?

Copy the carousel post link and paste it into PullVid. The tool will detect all items in the album (photos and videos) and display them individually so you can download whichever ones you want.

Is it legal to download from Instagram?

Downloading Instagram content for personal and private use is a practice generally tolerated in most jurisdictions. Redistributing the content, using it commercially, or publishing it elsewhere without the author's permission may infringe copyright. Instagram also prohibits the use of external tools in its terms of service, though this is a contractual rather than criminal matter.

Can expired stories still be downloaded?

No. Once a story disappears from Instagram (after 24 hours if not saved as a Highlight), there is no way to recover it with any tool. Download stories you want to keep before they expire.
