Download videos on mobile without apps
Want to save a video on your phone without installing any app? It is entirely possible, and it is actually the safest way to do it. On both iPhone and Android, the browser you already have installed is enough to download videos from YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or X without touching the App Store or Google Play.
This guide walks you through every available method, step by step. For the full picture covering every platform and device, also check the ultimate guide to downloading videos.
Why download without apps?
App stores are full of video downloader apps. Almost all of them have one or more of these problems:
- Storage: each app takes up between 20 and 100 MB just to install, before you save a single video.
- Security: many third-party apps request excessive permissions (access to your contacts, photos, microphone) or contain adware outright.
- Malware: Google Play and the App Store constantly remove apps that contain malicious code. Installing an unknown app to download videos carries real risk.
- No updates: independent apps tend to stop working when YouTube or Instagram changes its API, and can be abandoned for weeks.
- Aggressive advertising: many free download apps bombard you with full-screen ads.
A web-based downloader like PullVid avoids all these problems: it runs in the browser, takes up no space on your phone, and asks for no permissions.
Download videos on iPhone without apps
On iOS, Safari is your best ally. Since iOS 13, the system includes the built-in Files app, which acts as a download manager. The full process:
- Open the social media app (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram…) and copy the video link: tap Share → Copy link.
- Open Safari and go to pullvid.com. Paste the link into the search field.
- When the download options appear, choose your preferred quality (720p or 1080p for most use cases) and tap Download.
- Safari will show a notification in the address bar: tap the download icon (downward arrow). You will see the download progress.
- Once finished, tap the file in the downloads list. It will open in the Files app. From there, press and hold the video and choose Save to Photos to move it to your camera roll.
Note: if the video plays instead of downloading, press and hold the download button and select "Download linked file". This can happen with certain formats on iOS.
Download videos on Android without apps
On Android the process is even more straightforward because Chrome downloads directly to the device's Downloads folder:
- Copy the video link from the social media app (tap Share → Copy link).
- Open Chrome and go to pullvid.com. Paste the link and wait for the formats to load.
- Choose your preferred quality and tap Download. Chrome will show a download notification in the top bar.
- When done, open the My Files app (Samsung) or Files (stock Android) and go to the Downloads folder.
- To move it to your gallery, press and hold the file and choose Move to → photos or videos folder.
On Android you can also use Firefox or Edge if you prefer. The process is identical: both save downloads to the same system Downloads folder. If you use Android, check our complete guide to download videos on Android with ease.
Using a web downloader like PullVid
PullVid is compatible with the most popular platforms: YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and X/Twitter. It does not matter which phone you access from; the site is optimized for small screens and works the same in Safari, Chrome, or Firefox.
The process is always the same: copy the link → paste it into PullVid → choose quality → download. No account needed, nothing to install. Check the platform-specific guides for Instagram or Facebook if you have questions about a specific platform.
The bookmarklet shortcut
If you download videos frequently, the PullVid bookmarklet will save you several steps. A bookmarklet is a special bookmark that, when tapped while watching a video in the browser, takes you directly to PullVid with that link already loaded.
How to install it on mobile:
- Visit the bookmarklet page from your mobile browser.
- Follow the instructions to add it to your bookmarks (on Safari: tap Share → Add Bookmark; on Chrome: tap ⋮ → Bookmarks → Save).
- Next time you are watching a video in the browser, open your bookmarks and tap the PullVid one. The video will load automatically.
The bookmarklet works in any browser that supports JavaScript bookmarks, including Safari, Chrome, Firefox, and Edge on mobile.
Common problems and solutions
Sometimes the process does not go smoothly. Here are the most frequent issues and how to fix them:
- Video plays instead of downloading (iPhone/Safari): press and hold the download button and choose "Download linked file". You can also try another browser such as Firefox for iOS.
- No option to save to Photos (iOS): open the Files app, find the video in the Downloads folder, press and hold it, and choose "Save to Photos".
- Chrome on Android is not downloading the file: check that you have granted Chrome permission to save files in Settings → Apps → Chrome → Permissions → Storage. On Android 13 and above this is no longer required.
- The link does not work in PullVid: make sure the video is public (not private or from a closed group) and that you copied the full URL. Shortened links (such as bit.ly) also work.
- The video does not download at the expected quality: some platforms cap the maximum quality available. If the original video is 720p, you cannot download it at 1080p even if you select it.
- The downloaded file will not play: make sure you have a video player installed. On iPhone, the native iOS player supports MP4 without issues. On Android, VLC is the most compatible option if the format is WebM.
Frequently asked questions
Can you download videos on iPhone without apps?
Yes. With Safari and a web downloader like PullVid you can download videos without installing any application. The video is saved in the built-in Files app on iOS and from there you can move it to your camera roll.
Where are downloaded videos saved on Android?
Chrome saves videos to the Downloads folder in internal storage. You can access it from the My Files app (Samsung) or Files (stock Android). To view them in your gallery, move them to the videos or photos folder.
Is it safe to download videos from the browser without apps?
Yes, and it is actually safer than installing third-party apps. A web downloader like PullVid requests no permissions, has no access to your photos or contacts, and the connection is encrypted (HTTPS). The only file it downloads is the video itself.
Does it work with any social network?
PullVid supports YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and X/Twitter, among other platforms. It only works with public content: private videos, closed-group content, or anything requiring authentication cannot be downloaded.
Does downloading a video use a lot of data?
It depends on the quality. A 3-minute video at 720p is roughly 50–80 MB; at 1080p, between 100 and 200 MB. To save data, connect to Wi-Fi before downloading or choose a lower quality such as 480p.
