Where are downloaded videos saved? (Android, iPhone and PC)

Daniel CarterBy Daniel CarterPublished July 3, 20265 min read

When you download a video from your browser, it's saved to your device's Downloads folder: on Android and on your PC it lands there directly, and on the iPhone it goes to the Files app (Downloads folder), from where you can move it to Photos. It isn't saved to your gallery automatically, which is why it sometimes seems to "disappear" even though it did download.

Where they're saved on a PC (Windows and Mac)

On a computer, the video goes to your user Downloads folder, the same one the browser uses for everything. Open it quickly with the browser shortcut (Ctrl+J on Windows, ⌥⌘L in Chrome on Mac) or from your file explorer → Downloads. If you changed the download folder in your browser settings, it will be wherever you set it.

Where they're saved on Android

On Android the file is saved to the Downloads folder. You'll find it by opening the "Files" or "My Files" app → Downloads. To see it in your gallery, open the Files app, press and hold the video and choose to move it or share it with your Gallery; some phones index it on their own after a while.

Where they're saved on iPhone (iOS)

On iPhone, Safari saves downloads to the Files app, in the Downloads folder (not directly to Photos). To get it in your camera roll: open Files → Downloads, press and hold the video and choose "Save to Photos". This is how iOS handles any web download, not a fault of the downloader. We cover it in downloading videos on iPhone.

I can't find the video I downloaded

  • Look in Downloads, not the gallery: on mobile the file sits in Files → Downloads until you move it to Photos.
  • Check your browser's download history (Ctrl+J / menu → Downloads): it tells you the name and the exact location of the last file.
  • On iPhone, if it's not in Photos it's because it's still in the Files app; use "Save to Photos" on it.
  • Search by the name "PullVid" in your device's file search.

If the problem isn't finding it but that the file won't open, we cover that in a downloaded video that won't play. And to download from your phone without hassle, see the guide on downloading videos on mobile without apps.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn't the downloaded video show up in my gallery?

Because on mobile, browser downloads go first to the Downloads folder (or the Files app on iPhone), not to the gallery. To see it in your camera roll you have to move it with "Save to Photos" (iPhone) or to the Gallery (Android).

Where are videos saved on iPhone?

In the Files app, Downloads folder. Safari doesn't save directly to Photos. Press and hold the file in Files and choose "Save to Photos" to get it in your camera roll.

How do I change the folder where downloads are saved?

From your browser settings, in the Downloads section, you can pick another folder or ask it to prompt each time where to save. The video will then be saved to the location you choose.

I downloaded a video and now I can't find it, what do I do?

Open your browser's download history (Ctrl+J on Windows, or menu → Downloads): it shows the file name and a link to open its folder. On mobile, look in Files → Downloads.
