Why You Can't Download an X (Twitter) Video and How to Fix It

June 29, 20267 min read

If an X (formerly Twitter) video won't download, it's almost always one of these causes: the account is private (protected), the tweet was deleted or the account suspended, the content is marked as sensitive and needs confirmation, or you simply copied the link wrong. The good news: most of them are fixable in seconds. Here are all the causes, ordered from the most common to the least, each with its fix.

This guide is specific to X. For download problems that can happen on any platform (a file that won't play, a slow download, no sound), check the general guide on why you can't download a video.

1. The account is private (protected)

This is the number one cause. If the tweet's author has a protected account (the lock next to their name), their videos are visible only to their approved followers, and no tool can download them, because they require your logged-in session and the author's permission. It's not a PullVid bug: that's how X is designed. We explain it in detail in downloading videos from private X accounts.

Fix: you can only download videos from public tweets. If the content is public but it still fails, move on to the points below.

2. The tweet was deleted or the account suspended

If the author deleted the tweet, removed their account, or X suspended it, the video no longer exists on the servers and there's no way to recover it. You'll notice because, when you open the link on X, you see 'This post is unavailable' or 'Account suspended'.

  • Fix: check the link by opening it on X. If the tweet itself won't load in the app, the video can't be downloaded from anywhere.
  • Sometimes it's temporary: a suspension can be reversed. If the tweet becomes visible again, you'll be able to download it once more.

3. The content is marked as sensitive

X marks some videos as sensitive content and hides them behind a warning. If that content is public, you can usually download it by pasting the link into the X (Twitter) downloader: PullVid processes the tweet even if you see the warning. What you can't and shouldn't do is bypass age restrictions using someone else's session.

Fix: copy the tweet link as normal (Share → Copy link) and paste it. If the content is public, it will work; if it's also on a protected account, it won't.

4. You copied the link wrong

A classic: instead of the tweet link you copied the author's profile link, or the URL was incomplete. PullVid needs the address of that specific tweet, in the format x.com/username/status/123….

  • Open the specific tweet first (tap its date or time) and then copy with Share → Copy link.
  • The short t.co link and the older twitter.com ones work too.
  • More detail in how to copy an X video link.

5. It's a quote tweet or a thread

If the tweet you opened quotes another one that contains the video, or the video is in a different reply in the thread, you may be copying the link of the wrong tweet. Open the tweet that actually shows the video (the one that plays the clip) and copy its link, not the one of the comment quoting it.

6. A temporary network or X glitch

Sometimes X has momentary outages or processing fails because of the connection. If you've ruled out everything above:

  • Wait a minute and paste the link again.
  • Try a different connection (mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or vice versa).
  • Check that the video plays correctly inside X before trying to download it.

If the problem isn't downloading but that the already-downloaded file won't open or has no sound, that's covered separately in the guides on a downloaded video that won't play and on quality.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I download a video from a private X account?

Because tweets from protected accounts are visible only to approved followers and require the author's permission. No tool can download them, legally or technically. You can only download videos from public accounts.

X says the post is unavailable — what do I do?

It means the tweet was deleted or the account suspended or removed. The video no longer exists on X's servers and can't be recovered by any downloader. If the suspension is reversed and the tweet comes back, you'll be able to download it again.

Can I download a video marked as sensitive on X?

If the content is public, usually yes: copy the tweet link and paste it into PullVid, which processes the tweet even if you see the sensitive-content warning. What you can't do is bypass age restrictions using someone else's account.

I copied the link but it still doesn't work

Make sure you copy the link of the specific tweet (open it by tapping its date and use Share → Copy link), not the profile link. If the tweet quotes another one with the video, copy the one that plays the clip. The t.co, x.com, and twitter.com links are all valid.
