How to download videos for editing in CapCut and other editors

June 28, 20266 min read

To edit a video in CapCut or any other editor you first need the file saved on your device. With PullVid you download that video in high-quality MP4 and then import it into the editor you prefer. Important: PullVid only downloads the file; the editing (cuts, text, effects) is done by you inside CapCut, CapCut for PC or another editing program.

Why download a video for editing?

Video editors work with local files. You can't drag a YouTube or TikTok link straight onto the CapCut timeline: you need the video downloaded to your gallery or a folder. Downloading the video lets you trim it, add music, subtitles or transitions, combine it with other clips and export your own version. It's the first step of any edit.

What format and quality is best for editing?

For editing, the easiest choice is to download the video as MP4 (H.264): it's the most compatible format with CapCut, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, iMovie and almost any editor. Pick the highest resolution available (1080p or 4K if it exists), because you can always lower quality on export, but you can't recover quality you never downloaded.

  • MP4 (H.264): the safe option. It imports without conversion into nearly every editor.
  • High resolution (1080p/4K): gives you room to crop and zoom without losing sharpness.
  • Avoid WebM if your editor struggles: some editors won't accept it; in that case MP4 is the safe bet.
  • If in doubt, read the guide on best video formats and quality.

How to download a video to edit it, step by step

  1. Copy the link of the video you want to edit (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, etc.).
  2. Open PullVid in your browser and paste the link into the search field.
  3. Wait a few seconds for the available formats to appear.
  4. Choose MP4 at the highest resolution you need.
  5. Click Download and save the file to your device.
  6. Open CapCut (or another editor) and import the downloaded file to start editing.

Tips for editing in CapCut and other editors

  • CapCut mobile: download the video to your gallery, then in CapCut tap 'New project' and pick it from the camera roll.
  • CapCut for PC: import the MP4 from your Downloads folder by dragging it into the media library.
  • Other editors (Premiere, DaVinci, iMovie): they all import MP4 without conversion. The file you download works the same in any of them.
  • Remember: PullVid doesn't edit the video. It only hands you the file; the cuts and effects are made in the editor.

Common problems when editing

  • The editor won't accept the file: download it again as MP4 (H.264). It's the most universal format.
  • The video looks blurry when you zoom: you downloaded a low resolution. Go back to PullVid and pick 1080p or 4K.
  • I can't find the file in CapCut mobile: make sure the video was saved to the gallery/photos and not to a downloads folder the editor doesn't scan.
  • Audio and video are out of sync: this is usually fixed by re-importing the MP4; avoid exotic formats.

Frequently asked questions

What format is best for editing a video?

MP4 with the H.264 codec is the most compatible: CapCut, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve and iMovie all accept it without conversion. Download it at the highest resolution possible for room to edit.

Does PullVid edit the video?

No. PullVid only downloads the video file. The editing —cuts, text, music, effects— is done inside CapCut or another editor. PullVid is the step before: it hands you the file ready to import.

Can I edit a YouTube video in CapCut?

Yes. Download the video as MP4 with PullVid, save it to your device and import it into CapCut. Mind copyright: personal use is usually fine, but reposting someone else's content needs permission.

Do I lose quality when downloading to edit?

Not if you pick the highest resolution available. Download 1080p or 4K when it exists, so you keep detail for cropping or zooming during editing.
