Why I Can't Download a TikTok Video and How to Fix It
If a TikTok won't download, it's almost always for one of these reasons: the account is private, the video is restricted in your country or region, the video was deleted, the link is for a photo carousel (which isn't a downloadable video), or you copied the link wrong. Most of them are fixable in seconds. Here's every cause along with its fix.
This guide is specific to TikTok. For problems that can happen on any platform (the file won't play, slow download), check the general guide on why I can't download a video.
1. The account is private
If the author has their account set to private, their videos are only visible to approved followers, and no tool can download them because they require your logged-in session and the author's permission. We explain it in detail in downloading videos from private TikTok accounts.
Fix: only TikToks from public accounts can be downloaded. If the account is public but it still fails, move on to the next points.
2. The video is restricted by region ("not available in your country")
TikTok limits some videos to certain countries due to music rights, local regulations, or the creator's choice. If you see "This video is not available" or "Not available in your region", the restriction comes from TikTok and affects downloading too.
- Fix: check whether the video plays in the TikTok app itself on your connection. If TikTok won't show it in your country, the downloader won't be able to fetch it either.
- Note: PullVid does not bypass regional or geographic blocks; it only processes accessible public content.
3. The video was deleted or the account removed
If the author deleted the TikTok or removed/suspended their account, the video no longer exists on the servers and can't be recovered. You'll notice because opening the link in TikTok shows "Video unavailable" or "This account doesn't exist".
Fix: open the link in the app. If TikTok itself won't load it, there's no way to download it from anywhere.
4. It's a photo carousel, not a video
TikTok allows posts that are a photo slideshow with music instead of a video. Those posts aren't a video file, so they can't be downloaded as a regular MP4. It's a limitation of the format itself, not a glitch.
- If you only want the audio from the slideshow, use the TikTok to MP3 converter: the sound can indeed be extracted.
- If you want the photos, open them in the app and save them individually; a video downloader doesn't bundle them into a single file.
5. You copied the link wrong or it expired
PullVid needs the link to the specific video, not the author's profile. Also, the short vm.tiktok.com / vt.tiktok.com links sometimes expire if they're very old.
- Open the specific TikTok and use Share → Copy link.
- If the short link fails, open the video in your browser and copy the full long URL (
tiktok.com/@username/video/123…). - More detail in how to copy a TikTok link.
6. A temporary network or TikTok glitch
- Wait a minute and paste the link again.
- Try another connection (mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, or vice versa).
- Make sure the video plays on TikTok before trying to download it.
If the problem isn't downloading but rather that the already-downloaded file won't open, that's covered in downloaded video that won't play.
Frequently asked questions
Why does TikTok say the video isn't available in my country?
TikTok restricts some videos by region (music rights, local regulations, or the creator's choice). If the video won't play in the app on your connection, it can't be downloaded. PullVid doesn't bypass regional blocks; it only processes accessible public content.
Can I download a TikTok from a private account?
No. TikToks from private accounts are only seen by approved followers and require the author's permission, so no tool can download them. Only public accounts work.
Why can't I download a TikTok that's a photo slideshow?
Because that kind of post is a carousel of images with music, not a video file. It doesn't download as an MP4. You can extract the audio as MP3, but the photos have to be saved individually from the app.
I copied the link but it doesn't work — what do I do?
Make sure you copy the link to the specific video (Share → Copy link), not the profile. If the short vm.tiktok.com or vt.tiktok.com link fails, open the video in your browser and copy the full long URL.
