What resolution to download? 720p, 1080p, or 4K (quick guide)
Quick rule: for mobile, 720p or 1080p is plenty; for PC or TV, pick 1080p; and save 4K for genuine 4K screens or for editing. With PullVid you choose the resolution at the moment you download, so you can match it to what you actually need.
What a video's resolution means
Resolution is the number of pixels in the image. 720p (HD) is 1280×720; 1080p (Full HD) is 1920×1080; and 4K (Ultra HD) is 3840×2160, four times more pixels than 1080p. More resolution = more sharpness… but also a bigger file. The key point is that the resolution you download can't exceed that of the original video: if the video was uploaded in 1080p, there's no real 4K to download.
Which resolution to pick by screen and use
- Mobile (watching on the go): 720p is enough and saves space; 1080p if you want the best.
- Computer or regular TV: 1080p is the sweet spot: excellent sharpness without huge files.
- 4K screen or TV: 4K if the original offers it; you'll notice the detail on big screens.
- Editing or zooming in: download the highest resolution available so you have room to crop.
- Low on space or on mobile data: 720p cuts the size a lot without showing on small screens.
1080p vs 4K: is 4K worth it?
4K looks spectacular on big, genuine 4K screens, but it takes up several times more space and you only benefit if your screen is 4K. On a phone, the difference between 1080p and 4K is almost imperceptible and just wastes space. If you have a 4K screen and plenty of room, go for it: you have the download in 4K tool and the how to download videos in 4K guide.
Resolution and file size
The higher the resolution, the bigger the file. Before downloading a long video in 4K, it's worth knowing how much space it'll take: you'll find it in the how much a video weighs by quality guide. And if you want to understand containers and codecs, see the best video formats and quality.
Frequently asked questions
Which resolution is better, 1080p or 4K?
It depends on your screen. On a phone or a regular TV, 1080p is the best quality-to-size ratio. 4K is only worth it on genuine 4K screens or if you're going to edit and need headroom, and in return the file is much bigger.
Can I download any video in 4K?
Only if the video was published in 4K. The download resolution never exceeds the original's: if it was uploaded in 1080p, there's no real 4K to download, even if some app artificially "upscales" it without gaining detail.
Which resolution uses the least data and space?
720p is the lightest while keeping good quality on small screens. If you're on mobile data or low on storage, it's the most practical option.
Does resolution affect audio quality?
No. Audio is separate; choosing 720p or 4K doesn't change the sound. If you only care about the audio, download it separately as MP3.
