I Can't Download a Private Video: Why, and What You Can Do (2026)

June 28, 20266 min read

If you try to download a private or restricted video and the tool shows no formats or returns an error, it's not a glitch that can be "fixed": it's the expected behavior. Private videos, content from private accounts, or anything protected behind a login or a payment requires the owner's permission to be viewed, which is why it can't — and shouldn't — be downloaded without it. At PullVid we don't teach people how to get around logins, passwords, or content protections. What we can explain is why it fails and what content you can legitimately download.

Why can't I download a private or restricted video?

A web download tool can only access public content — the same content anyone can see without logging in. A private video, by contrast, is protected: the platform requires an authenticated session or specific permission to display it. Since the downloader doesn't have (and shouldn't have) your session or those permissions, the platform won't hand over the video, and the download isn't possible. It's not a limitation of the tool, but a privacy barrier put in place on purpose by the platform and by whoever uploaded the content.

Specific causes: why it fails

  • Video marked as private: whoever uploaded it restricted it so only specific people can see it. Without that permission, no outsider can access it.
  • Private account: the entire profile is private and only approved followers see its content.
  • Content behind a login: the video only plays if you're logged in and meet certain conditions (being a follower, a member, etc.).
  • Paid or subscription content: courses, premieres, or exclusive videos behind a paywall. Accessing without paying violates the service's terms.
  • Copy protection (DRM): film, series, and music platforms use DRM precisely to prevent downloading. We don't bypass it — and doing so is illegal in many countries.

What the law and common sense say

Here it pays to be clear and honest: private or paid content belongs to someone who has decided not to make it freely available. Downloading it without permission may breach both the platform's terms of use and the owner's copyright. It's not just a technical question, but a legal and ethical one. If you want to understand the framework calmly — without scaremongering but without half-truths — read our guide on whether downloading videos is legal. And if you need to know how we handle copyright and claims, you'll find our copyright and DMCA policy linked in the footer of every page.

What you CAN legitimately download

Just because a private video can't be downloaded doesn't mean you're out of options. There's plenty of content you can save without any issue:

  • Your own content. If you uploaded the video, you can download your copy using the platform's own tools (for example, by downloading your videos or requesting a copy of your data).
  • Public videos. All content published publicly and accessible without logging in can be downloaded with PullVid to watch offline.
  • Content with explicit permission. If the owner authorizes you to download their video, go ahead: permission changes everything.
  • Freely licensed material. Videos under open licenses (Creative Commons, public domain) meant to be reused.

In all those cases, downloading is legitimate and you can do it with PullVid. When you do, do it safely too: we explain how in the guide on whether downloading videos is safe. And if a video you think is public won't download, it may be due to other technical causes; check them in why you sometimes can't download a video.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to download a private video?

Downloading private or paid content without the owner's permission may breach both the platform's terms and copyright. It's only legitimate if it's your own content, if you have permission, or if the license allows it.

If it's my own private video, how do I download it?

Use the tools on the platform where you uploaded it: almost all of them let the author download their videos or request a copy of their data. As the owner, you have full rights to your content.

Can PullVid download private or paid videos?

No. PullVid only accesses public content — the same content anyone can see without logging in. It can't (and shouldn't) get around logins, passwords, or payment or DRM protections.

Why can't a tool download a private video?

Because the platform requires an authenticated session or specific permission to show that video, and the downloader doesn't have them. Privacy is set by the owner on purpose; it's not a glitch that can be fixed.

What about DRM-protected content from streaming platforms?

DRM exists precisely to prevent downloading, and bypassing it is illegal in many countries. We don't do it. To watch that content offline, use the official download feature in the app itself when it offers one.
